Research openings (Apply at Any Time!)

We plan to enrol one or two Ph.D. candidates or Research Asistants each year focusing on Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) study of condensed matter such as topological materials, superconductors, low dimensional materials, strong correlated materials, and other quantum materials with novel electronic structure.

The research tasks for the candidates are following

1, Learning and mastering skills of ARPES and the related data analysis software.

2, Focusing research on novel electronic structure including band structure, Fermi surface, energy gap as well as its symmetry, Fermi velocity, etc., of quantum materials; Studying the quantum excitations, topological features, superconductivity, as well as electron-boson coupling from ARPES spectra.

3, Conducting synchrotron-based ARPES experiments over the world in large facilities, e.g. SLS in Switzerland, SSRF in Shanghai, BESSY in Berlin, Soleil in France, ELETTRA in Italy.

The candidates should have strong interest in experiments; strong background on physics especially solid-state physics; top academic performance in the class. Good English expression and writing skills are required (79 in ToEFL, or 6.5 in IELTS, or 490 in CET6). Before applying, the candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Junzhang Ma with Email: (junzhama@cityu.edu.hk), with CV and transcript attached. The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is highly recommended to candidates for the PhD program.

• Hong Kong PhD Fellowship: a yearly stipend of HK$319,200 and travel allowance of HK$13,300 per year

 • Postgraduate Studentship: HK$17,510 per month

 • Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies Entrance Scholarships: HK$81,096

 • Additional academic awards, allowances and subsidies are available

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position

A highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow is sought to join our group focused on the study of topological materials, superconductors, and correlated systems using Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) techniques.

The successful candidate will be part of a team that is at the forefront of ARPES research, with a focus on the study of electronic structure of new and exciting materials, including topological insulators, superconductors, and strongly correlated materials. The candidate will be expected to design and carry out cutting-edge ARPES experiments, analyze and interpret data, and participate in the writing of papers for publication in high-impact journals.

  1. The ideal candidate should have a PhD in Physics or a related field;

  2. A strong background in experimental solid-state physics;

  3. Experience with ARPES or related spectroscopic techniques;

  4. Familiarity with the analysis of ARPES data and programming skills (e.g. Igor, Matlab) are highly desirable.

  5. The candidate should have a strong publication record and excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

The position is for two years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, based on performance. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.To apply, please send a cover letter, CV, and three letters of recommendation to the PI. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
